There and back again

My apologies for almost two years of silence. Those who receive my email newsletters got a Christmas letter a few months ago where they learned that I had started a full-time position in Baylor’s Entrepreneurship program almost a year earlier, but was still (very slowly) working on the book.

I thought the job would include the opportunity to work with visual and performing arts students. So, when that didn’t happen, and I wasn’t able to give the book enough attention, and Chuck and I started making plans (again) to leave Waco (eventually), I resigned the Baylor position. My last day was Tuesday, April 30.

Here’s what was awaiting me in the Inbox the next morning. It wouldn’t be the first time God has spoken to me through Steven Pressfield* (although I’m not sure if God swears?).

It’s tempting to feel like I wandered in a circle for more than a year before finding myself right back where I started, but one great thing about trusting God is that I know that he is active in my life and can use whatever I give him access to for his glory and my benefit. And I know that I’m not coming back to it the same person. I learned a lot, about entrepreneurship and myself, and I had the privilege of serving some amazing students and getting even more sure that working with students is what God is calling me to do to build his Kingdom.

About 1/3 of the students I worked most closely with – Bryanah, Arpit, Alan, Ryan, Sean, me, Nick, Payton, Jose, Aaron. I will miss them.

So I’m back to it. The bulk of the book is with a professional editor now. While she’s making her notes, I’ll be finishing up a few short sections so that, once I’ve made my final edits from her, I’ll have something pretty complete to start shopping around to publishers. I’ll also start reaching out to colleges about speaking in the upcoming school year.

God willing, it won’t be two more years for another update.

*Steven Pressfield is the author of The War of Art and many other non-fiction books for writers and other creatives. Here’s his basic spiel. It’s important stuff.
